LyoVial lyophilization

Contract Lyophilization Services in Canada — Pilot-Scale Vial Freeze-Drying

LyoVial provides contract lyophilization services in Canada for teams that have outgrown a benchtop dryer but aren’t ready for commercial-scale manufacturing. We handle formulation, cycle development, and pilot-batch vial freeze-drying for diagnostics, biotech, and specialty research groups — the projects that fall into the gap most CDMOs would rather not touch.

Canadian contract lyophilization services, done properly

LyoVial is a Canadian contract lyophilization company built around one clear idea: pilot-scale, vial-format freeze-drying done properly. We take on the projects that fall in an awkward gap for the big CDMOs — too small for their minimums, too critical for a benchtop unit in your own lab.

Our clients are diagnostic assay reagent manufacturers, calibrator and control producers, microbiology media and supplement suppliers, analytical testing laboratories, university and institutional R&D groups, and cosmetic ingredient formulators. What they have in common is a formulation that needs a locked, reproducible lyophilization cycle, and a partner who'll tell them plainly what will and won't work.

We're part of the Evik Diagnostics group of companies. Freeze-drying process expertise across diagnostic applications isn't a bolt-on service for us — it's what the group has been built around. If you've been looking for contract lyophilization services in Canada from a specialist rather than a generalist CDMO, that's the space we sit in.

What We Do

Three services covering the full lyophilization workflow

Three services that follow the natural sequence of a lyophilization project: work out the formulation, lock the cycle, then produce the pilot batches. Each stage is documented so it can transfer cleanly to your own operation, or to whoever manufactures for you next.

Who We Serve

Teams that turn to LyoVial for contract freeze-drying

The teams that come to us usually share one of a handful of profiles. If your work falls outside these and involves a lyophilized product, get in touch anyway — we'll tell you plainly whether we're a fit.

Why Choose Us

Why teams choose LyoVial for contract lyophilization services

There are only a handful of lyophilization companies in Canada that will take on pilot-scale work. Here's what separates us from the ones that will — and from the big CDMOs that won't.

Formulation-first, not just a service run

Most freeze drying services will run whatever cycle you hand them. We start with the formulation — because a bad cycle on a mismatched formulation costs you a batch, and you rarely find out until reconstitution. Fixing it at the formulation stage costs a fraction of what fixing it at pilot scale does.

Pilot-scale is our scale, not a stretch

We deliberately stay at the pilot batch level. That means your project isn't the smallest thing on the floor, and it isn't being fitted around a commercial run. If your product has outgrown pilot volumes, we'll help you scope what a scale-up partner needs from the work we've already done together.

Formulation Expertise

Excipient selection, cryoprotectant screening, and thermal characterization done up front — so the cycle you lock in actually holds through scale-up and long-term stability.

Documented Cycle Development

Batch records, cycle parameters, and process notes structured for technology transfer from day one — so the process moves cleanly to whoever manufactures it next.

Common Questions

Common Questions

Things buyers ask us most often before a first call. If your question isn't here, send it — we'll answer plainly.

Is lyophilization the same as freeze drying?
Yes. Lyophilization and freeze drying refer to the same process: removing water from a frozen product under vacuum so ice sublimes directly to vapor. The terms are used interchangeably in diagnostics, biotech, and contract manufacturing.
What batch sizes do you handle?
We focus on pilot-scale vial lyophilization — the step between benchtop development and commercial manufacturing. Exact capacity depends on vial format and cycle design; tell us your target batch size and we'll confirm fit on the first call.
Do you handle GMP lyophilization work?
We operate quality-minded, documented workflows suited to diagnostic and laboratory development. If your project requires a specific GMP tier beyond our scope, we'll say so plainly and help you understand what documentation from our pilot work will transfer to a GMP manufacturer.
What products do you lyophilize?
Typical work includes diagnostic assay reagents, calibrators and controls, microbiology media and supplements, analytical reference materials, university and institutional R&D samples, and specialty cosmetic actives — all in vial formats.
How long does lyophilization cycle development take?
Timing depends on formulation complexity, characterization needs, and scheduling. Many programs start with a feasibility discussion, then move into targeted cycle trials. We'll give you a realistic timeline once we understand your material and goals.
Where is LyoVial located and can I visit?
We are at 105 Schneider Road, Unit 123, Kanata, Ontario K2K 1Y3 — in the Ottawa area. On-site meetings and facility visits are welcome for Ottawa and Ontario partners. Call (613) 614-8733 or email vlad@evik.ca to arrange a visit.
